Emperor Kublai Khan of the Yuan Dynasty granted it the title "​​Sihan Tianshi​​" (嗣汉天师), signifying its role in preserving the orthodox traditions of Han-era Taoism, while Ming Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang honored it as the "​​Supreme Leader of Zhengyi Taoism​​", cementing its authority over all Taoist practices in China.
